Rolleston WI - A Golden Jubilee Celebration in Flowers
Rolleston on Dove Women's Institute were the hostesses at a special Golden Jubilee demonstration given by Janet Stone at the John of Rolleston Primary School on Monday 30 September. Throughout the evening, she kept up an amusing and informative commentary on what each arrangement depicted, with historical background and the reasons for her choice of flowers.
Mrs Stone began with an arrangement reflecting the Coronation in 1953. It included a Union Flag from that time, and she pointed out that it was the centenary of the introduction of the bowler hat. Her second arrangement, based around a rather crumpled wedding dress, was her interpretation of Princess Diana's wedding bouquet. She then arranged exotic flowers around a "native drum", depicting the Royal Tour of the Commonwealth in 1952-54.
An arrangement for a church window referred to Her Majesty the Queen's position as head of the Church of England. A garden urn and a plaid showed Her Majesty's love of the gardens at Balmoral, and the sixth and final demonstration was of the Golden Jubilee itself, with fresh and dried flowers depicting the fireworks which were such a prominent feature of the celebrations.
