Rolleston Club News 2005

Winter 2005

I would like to thank everyone for the support that they have given to Rolleston Club over this last year, we have tried to involve the Club with the village as much as possible and “in dominoes” I would like to mention just some of the events that we have held.

Commemoration of V.E. Day, June 6th with a Church Parade and raising the Union Flag on the bowling green at the Club and in the evening a 1940s night with corned beef and Spam sandwiches, it was a very good night.

Commemoration of V.J. Day, August 23rd with 1940’s night, evening entertainment at the Club.

TRAFALGAR NIGHT, held on Sunday, October 23rd. This was a very successful night and was arranged by Ann Burston and RODSEC everyone said that they had a brilliant time, and enjoyed singing “LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY.” (One or two times)

We had a rummage sale to raise money to buy a skittle ally, which was a great success, so if you would like to play skittles come down on a Monday evening and join in the fun.

A coffee morning for the Macmillan Cancer Appeal was organized by Brenda, Jill, Kay, Peggy, and many more helpers from the club and village and they raised over, £940:00. Well Done. (and the cakes were very nice too!)

Our Games Secretary, Stacy Rushdon organized the Prize Presentation night. This involves a lot of work getting all the prizes sorted out, so thank you Stacy for a job well done.

At the time of writing, the Club is organizing “Children in Need” to be held on 18th November, with help from the bar staff, Committee, the Games Secretary and Members of the Club, and if it’s anything like last year it will be excellent.

Also the W. I. Christmas Fare will be held at the Club again this year on19th November, with all their excellent cakes, pies, etc.

The club is used by quite a few village organizations, the British Legion hold a bingo night, and we have bingo every Friday and Sunday night so why not come and have a good night out.

If you are a member you can hire the main hall for parties, etc.

Finally if you are not a member of Rolleston Club why not come down and join? Membership renewal starts from January 1st 2006, we have lots to offer you, Fine Beer, Fine Wines, Bowling Green, Darts, Dominoes, Crib, Whist and much more.

Live Entertainment every Saturday night is organized by our Entertainment Secretaries, Tim James and Stewart Venables.

Could I also thank our Vice Chairman, Barry Hyde, Secretary, John Edwards, and our Treasurer, Alan Phillips and all the Committee, bar staff, for all the good work they have put in this year.

On behalf of the Officers, Committee, and Staff, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

James Toon, President, Rolleston Club.

Plans are now being made to celebrate the end of the World War 2 VE Day on Sunday May 8th, by the various organizations in Rolleston village.

It is proposed to have a Church Parade with the parade assembling at the Scout Head quarters at 9:15am and leaving for the church at 9:30am to arrive at the church for the service at 10am.The Burton Sea Cadets have volunteered to provide a Parade Marshal and escort, and a bugler. We are hoping to use the same band that we had for the last parade.

The service will end at 11am with the salute being taken out side the church, and the raising of the colours at the Rolleston Club at around 11:30am.

Plans for this occasion include :-

Well dressing, Children’s street party, Exhibition of World War 2 Memorabilia in the Old Grammar School.

There will be entertainment at Rolleston Club in the evening with a World War 2 theme and of course, Spam sandwiches and Corned Beef etc.

The next meeting to discuss these events will be at Rolleston Club, March 14th 7:30 pm in the Lounge. All organizations are cordially invited to attend, we need as much help as possible to make this event a success, and to remember all who gave there lives for us in the in World War 2 (lest we forget).
