Rolleston Pre-School Playgroup agreed to take over the reins of the organization of the annual pancake races this year. With greater access to the younger members of our village it appears they were successful (helped by the lovely weather) in encouraging more teams. The large crowd noticeably thinned after the childrens' races as the youngsters headed to Rolleston Club for their well earned pancakes.
Pictured are just a few of the many entrants including the overall winners 'Rolleston Reds'.
History of the Pancake Races
The first village pancake race was held in 1988 and organised by St Mary’s Church as a fund raiser for the church. At that time the race was run along Brookside - a very unforgiving surface when anyone had the misfortune to take a tumble. After several years Rolleston Civic Trust came in as a partner with the Church with the proceeds continuing to be donated to church funds. In the 1990’s Rolleston Playschool joined with us to provide the very welcome after race refreshments of pancakes, cooked and served in the Old Grammar School Room. Things change and in more recent years the races have transferred to the softer course on the Croft. We also now have to pay a licence fee for the event and naturally we have to do a risk assessment! Even more recently the refreshments have moved to the larger venue of the club but still run by the renamed Rolleston Pre-School Playgroup. The proceeds of the pancake races are now split between both St Mary’s and Pre-School.
