As in previous years we were overwhelmed with entries for this very popular event. This year we were blessed with fine weather, which was just as well following a very wet Sunday. Closing Burnside up to Elizabeth Avenue was necessary to accommodate the increased entry. It was estimated that over 2500 people, a lot of them local families, came to see over 140 cars, motor bikes, cycles and lorries.
The event was held in conjunction with the Grand Garage Sale Tour and two ‘free’ buses toured round, generally full. The whole event was enhanced by the presence of the flotilla of boats, the display of flowers in the giant water lilies as well as the magnificent well dressing.
To complement the Jubilee theme exhibitors were asked to come in attire appropriate to the age of their vehicle and a special section of the Croft allocated. This was well supported and added another dimension to the event. Because of the massive entry 25 cars were parked on Burnside outside the Alms Houses as well as 18 at Rolleston Service Station.
A children’s bouncy castle and slide, as well as a narrow gauge railway were set up on Burnside. There were also classic lorries, brewery drays and a lovely organ that played for most of the day.
On the Croft the marquee housed the splendid collection of model cranes, an Ordinary Cycle (penny farthing) and model planes; outside a fine display of ‘mint condition’ classic bicycles, next to which was a good turnout of motor cycles .
Once again the Sea Cadets did a sterling job in directing the public and we thank them for their efforts during the day. The Grammar School refreshments were busy all the time and greatly appreciated by everyone. And in Rolleston Club there was plenty to see; including - model railway, matchstick model trains and an art exhibition,
The event raises money from gates, sale of brochures and the raffle; plus a significant contribution from the ice cream van! The combined amount was slightly in excess of £4,000 and hence the Committee are delighted to announce that £3,000 was given to St. Mary’s Fabric Fund and £1,000 to St. Giles Hospice.
The Transport Festival Committee thank the Stewards for their hard work setting up, at the entrances, manning the buses, selling raffle tickets and clearing up afterwards.
