Friends of John of Rolleston Primary School News 2011
Newsletter - Winter 2011
We are now well into the Autumn term and the FOJORPS calendar is already in full swing. At our AGM on 22nd September we said thank you and goodbye to some valued committee members, but were pleased to welcome several new faces. We look forward to working together throughout the next school year, raising much-needed extra money to support our school.
Our first events of the school year took place before the half term holiday. The Children’s Discos at the start of October were particularly well attended this year, with the children enjoying a social afternoon with their friends. The Autumn Quiz on 7th October was a fun evening with 16 teams taking part; thanks again to John Furzeman for setting the questions and giving up his birthday to host the evening for us. The termly ‘Bag 2 School’ collections continue to be a success with 1.84 tonnes of unwanted clothing being donated this time. Our first Movie Night of the year was another great event, with the children (and some Mums and Dads) enjoying the family film ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’.
Our Christmas Bazaar will this year take place on Friday 9th December on the Alderbrook (Junior) site, starting at 3.45 pm. This annual favourite promises to be a wonderful afternoon, with musical entertainment from the school choir and orchestra, plus a range of festive stalls, refreshments and other attractions.
There will also be an opportunity for the children to visit Santa in his grotto – timed entry tickets will be on sale at school towards the end of November.
Looking ahead to the New Year, our second Ladies’ Night will take place on Friday 27th January. Last year’s event was a truly great evening….so ladies, book the date in your diaries now! More details will be available nearer the time.

Newsletter - Autumn 2011
Another academic year comes to an end and will be remembered as FOJORPS’ most successful year yet, with a record £17,500 being raised for the school. This could not have been achieved without the wonderful backing we are given by the families of the children at the school; thank you to anyone who has supported us in any way.
The committee has worked hard over the past 12 months with the addition of new events to add extra variety to the traditional favourites. Two notable successes have been the half-termly Movie Nights, and the Ladies Night held in the Spring Term. Both events will run again in the next school year.
Community Day was again the highlight of our year and the people of the village once more did us proud as they turned out in force to attend the event. It was particularly good to have the children more involved this year, with the Talent Show giving them an opportunity to display their musical and dancing skills. We were also glad to have some Year 6 students helping to run some of the stalls this year.

Newsletter - Summer 2011
Easter is now behind us and we are into the summer term, which is always a busy time for FOJORPS with Community Day just around the corner. The regular fundraising activities of last term all went well, bringing in much needed money for the school. Our Ladies’ Night on 11th February was a new event and, as such, something of a venture into the unknown. It proved to be a huge success, providing a great opportunity for the ladies of the village to let their hair down. Live entertainment from comedian Rob Falcon and singer Marcia Lynette Campbell was followed by music and dancing until late. It is our intention to run another Ladies’ Night next year; full details will be published nearer the time.
FOJORPS is looking forward to participating in this year’s Rolleston Scout Carnival. We have had a great response from over 40 children who were keen to be part of a walking float representing the school in the Carnival Procession. We wish the Scouts a successful day with more of the lovely weather that we have enjoyed during April!
This year’s Community Day will take place on Saturday 11th June starting at 11am, and planning for the event is well in hand, with many attractions, old and new, ensuring it will be a great day for all the family. We are delighted that a member of the Burton Albion Football Team will be with us to meet the crowds and sign autographs before officially opening the event at 12 noon. This year there will be a licensed bar so you can enjoy a beer and a burger whilst the children are kept amused by Pinxton Puppets.
Tutbury Junior Band will be with us again providing musical entertainment throughout the day. We have also been fortunate to secure a flypast from a Lancaster Bomber (as seen at this year’s Royal Wedding!!) at some point during the afternoon, guaranteeing that it will be a truly memorable day.
The next Bag2School collection is scheduled for Wednesday 15th June. Anyone wishing to donate items can leave them at school (either site) from Monday 13th June, or phone Shaun (563312) to arrange collection. Look out for the blue bag in your Community Day programme when it arrives!

Our second Bag-2-School collection of the year resulted in just over 1 tonne of clothing which raised £530 for the school. As we go to print we are busy planning a ‘Ladies’ Night’ with variety entertainment from comedian Rob Falcon, plus live music from Marcia Lynette Campbell, winner of Derby Fame Academy.
