As I write this report it is the middle of July and we are half-way through the 2017 League season. What is more we have had only one weekend which has caused match cancellations due to rain - that’s once in 11 weeks! Let’s hope the second half of the season is just as good.
Well there’s been so much cricket to watch on the television this year with the 20/20 World Cup, one day internationals, test matches, and now the T20 Blast. And still to come later this year - the Ashes from Australia. All very exciting (for some of us anyway) - but there has been some exciting matches at The Willows this year too.
The first team’s second season in the Derbyshire Premier League has been quite successful so far. if not a little inconsistent, with some really good victories, but also some disappointing losses -but the team has more than held its own against most of the stronger Clubs in the League.
The second team are also doing well and challenging for a promotion again from Division 4S, having just failed last year.
The third team are coping well with life in Division 5S and are currently about half-way in that division.
Our fourth team is a mixture of youngsters and more experienced players. They currently top Division 10S and have yet to lose a league match. So very hopeful of promotion back to Division 9S.
Our Junior teams at U-15 and U-17 levels are struggling a bit this year due mainly to a lack of available players in their respective age groups. Our U-13s and U-11s though are doing well, and our Kwik cricket (under 11) is as popular as ever. So plenty of opportunities for budding young hopefuls - boys and girls.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to come down to the ground for a look around the new ground and facilities, you are very welcome to do so any evening during the cricket season which ends in mid-September, and of course there are usually two matches at The Willows every weekend during that time.

At the time of writing the start of the 2017 cricket season is only a week away. The weather in April so far has been really good so here’s hoping it continues that way and not too many matches are rained off in our British summer.
Everyone at the Club is looking forward excitedly and expectantly to the new season.
The first team will again be in the Derbyshire County Premier League, but will unfortunately be without an overseas player due to new visa restrictions.
All four of our senior League teams now play their home matches at The Willows so there will be two matches for you to watch most Saturdays if you come along.
Thanks are due to our groundsmen – David Woodburn, John Hodson and Ian Wakefield for getting everything ready and looking so good.
As well as our four senior League teams on Saturdays, we run Sunday and midweek friendly teams. Our Junior teams operate at U-11 (Kwik cricket and hard-ball), U-13, U-15 and U-17 levels. Training details are available on request.
We also run a friendly team, known as ‘The Willowers’ for non-regular cricketers and they play evening matches throughout the season. If you fancy a game please contact the Club.
There are several County representative matches scheduled this summer including Derbyshire Women and Girls U-15s and Staffordshire Boys U-11s. A full list of fixtures is available from the Club on request and visitors are always welcome during the season.
If you would like to support or sponsor the Cricket Club you might be interested in our ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign – we still have a few spaces left if so please contact the Club or Club secretary. Bricks are placed on a ‘Sponsors Wall’ on the side of the main pavilion.
