Rolleston Cricket Club News 2013

Winter 2013 Newsletter

The 2013 season closed in September with all teams securing their places in their respective divisions for 2014.

The highlight of the season was reaching the semi-final of the National Village Cricket Competition – only one step away from playing at Lords - but we unfortunately lost in Cumbria to the eventual winners – Cleator CC.

There has been some progress regarding the field adjacent to the present cricket ground.

This has been purchased by Staffordshire County Council with a view to developing it as a second cricket ground and leasing it for use by the Club’s 3rd and 4th teams, who currently play their home matches in Marchington. The development could take a year or two, but it is very encouraging news.

Congratulations to our Club President – Alan Partington – on the long awaited publication of his well researched history of Rolleston Cricket Club. See the advert to get your copy!

Autumn 2013 Newsletter

The season continues to bring about some exciting cricket. Hundreds turned up at The Willows on Sunday 28th July to see our 1st XI take on Astwood Bank CC from Worcestershire in the last eight of the National Village KO Competition. The ground staff and officials did a fantastic job in getting the ground playable after thunderstorms the night before, but the work proved all worthwhile as Rolleston triumphed by two wickets in a nail-biting finish with 8 balls remaining.

The next step is the semi-final on August 11th – away to Cleator CC in Cumbria. A long journey, but the reward for victory is a final at Lords on September 8th.

Two other semi-finals are also in the offing – on Sunday 4th August we host Alfreton CC in the final of the Marstons Smooth League Trophy. The prize for winning is a final at Rolleston on Monday 26th August.

On the same day we are in the Breweries Cup semi-final at Alrewas. The fixture congestion though means that unfortunately we will have to field a weakened side for this fixture. The final is at Trentside CC on Sunday 18th August.

In the League all our teams are playing well with the fourth team in with a chance of promotion.

Congratulations to our U-15s who won the Burton & District League U-15 Division 1

By the time you receive this copy of the Rollestonian the 2013 cricket season will be well under way. Everyone at the Club has been looking forward to the new season, and coaching and practice sessions have been well attended throughout the winter months.

We have a new Club Captain – Mark James – who is expecting great things from his squad in his first year at the helm. We have recruited an overseas player again this season – Scott Baker from Australia, who had a successful season with us last year - and we look forward to him putting in some good performances for us in our attempt to maintain our Division 1 status.

Rather than list the fixtures here - the new fixture book will be available on request from the Club from the end of April.

Weather permitting there will be a league fixture every Saturday at Rolleston (1st / 2nd team ) and Marchington ( 3rd / 4th team ) from April 20th until September 8th. Our U-17s play home matches on a Monday evening, U-15s on a Thursday evening, U-13s on a Sunday morning. We also run U-11 teams for hard ball and Kwik Cricket – details of all these are available in the fixture book.

Spring 2013 Newsletter

The 2013 cricket season will soon be upon us, and pre-season ground preparations at Rolleston and Marchington will soon be under way – weather permitting ! Many of you will be aware that the ground has been totally under water several times during the past few months. Although no serious damage has been done it has highlighted that there is some work to do to in order to improve things for the future. Hopefully the weather will be better this summer, and we won’t have to open the bowling from the shallow end.

Our 1st XI won the Division 2 title at the first attempt last season so will be looking forward again to playing in Division 1. Once again we have a new Club skipper, Mark James, who is keen to show that the current squad is capable of holding their own at the higher level.

Our 2nd XI has a much better season last year, our 3rd XI also gained promotion to Division 6S and the 4th team narrowly missed promotion from Division 10S finishing 3rd. The first League matches are scheduled for Saturday 27th April.

We have been drawn at home to Hilton in the Quarter Finals of the Brewery Cup at the end of May, and will be hosts for the prestigious Marston’s Smooth Trophy Final at the end of August. A full list of fixtures is available on request and Club Handbooks should be ready by early April.

Our sincere thanks go to Dave Woodburn and John Hodson for all the work they put in looking after the ground and maintaining the ground machinery and equipment respectively.

We are again running four senior League teams on Saturdays plus Sunday and midweek friendly teams.

Junior teams are run at U-11 ( Kwik cricket and hard-ball ), U-13, U-15 and U-17 levels, and there are coaching evenings at the Club prior to and during the season.

If you are interested in becoming either a playing member ( junior or senior ) or social member, or if you want any further information about the Club, fixtures, junior cricket, social events ... etc. please contact the Club Secretary, Steve Cooper (07739 760786) or ask Michael Acton at the Club (01283 813449).
