Rolleston Cricket Club News 2002

Winter 2002 Newsletter

The 2002 season finished with our 1st team, skippered by Sean Green, narrowly missing out on promotion for the second successive year – by only 2 points !! Overall they had a reasonable year - but on reflection inconsistent batting performances were their main downfall.

Our 2nd team, with Richard Wyatt at the helm, fared much better and followed up their success in the League Cup with the runners-up slot in Division 4a.

The 3rd Team with Mick Clay in charge went one better still and finished the season on top of the Burton and District League’s Division 4.

Award winners for the 2002 season were :

1st XI Batting – Sean Green
1st XI Bowling – Alan Mellor
2nd XI Batting - Adrian Statham ( Adrian scored over 1000 runs in the season )
2nd XI Bowling – Simon Price
3rd XI Batting – Ian Taylor
3rd XI Bowling – John Hodson

Junior award winners were :

U – 17’s – Ben Stockley, Luke Nelson and Matthew Belmore
U – 15’s – Ben Stockley, Michael James and Gareth Marshall
U – 13’s – Joe Morgan and Edward Richardson

A new award – ‘The President’s Shield’ (kindly donated by Mr Alan Partrinfton) for The Young Player of the Year was won by Daniel Robotham.

Next season sees the start of the DCCL’s Pyramid League format. The 1st Team will not be affected, but the 2nd’s will be in Division 4 South. This will mean less travelling but some stiff opposition.

Secretary

Autumn 2002 Newsletter

At the halfway point of the season all three of our senior teams are in with a chance of promotion. The 1st XI is 4th in Division 2 of the Derbyshire County Cricket League. Unfortunately, the team was knocked out of this year’s Brewery Cup Competition by Draycott & Hanbury. However, ultimately this may prove an advantage by allowing them to concentrate on their League status. The 2nds are also in 4th position in Division 4a and there have been some particularly good batting and bowling performances in recent weeks. The 2nd team have also reached the final of the League Cup thanks to good all round performances, the highlights of which were a 7 wickets for 29 runs bowling achievement by Simon Price in the quarter final against Shipley Hall and 101 not out from Daniel Robotham in the semi final against Old Derbeians. The 3rd team are currently second in Division 4 of the Burton & District League and are very hopeful of clinching the title and promotion. The junior season is now over and although no trophies came our way this year, our U-15’s and U-17’s have both fared well in their respective leagues, and a lot of the youngsters are performing admirably in the senior sides.

Forthcoming Home Fixtures:
Sat 31st Aug: 1st XI v Denby
Sat. 7th Sept: 2nd XI v Selston Town
Sun 8th Sept: 1st XI v Sandiacre Town

Start times are August -1.30 pm; Sept. -1.00 pm

Why not come and support your local cricket club – we would love to see you at The Willows.

Summer 2002 Newsletter

After 3 matches the 1st XI are undefeated and are lying 2nd in Division 2 behind Ockbrook & Borrowash. Several good batting performances have been seen, topped by a ton from skipper Sean Green against Allestree.

The 2nd XI made a promising start with a winning draw against Rolls Royce but then fell to two successive defeats. Several juniors, however, have produced encouraging performances, so hopefully things will improve as experience and confidence grow.

The 3rd XI won their opening match against Kings Bromley where junior Luke Nelson starred with bat and ball. In their second match the team narrowly lost by 10 runs. Once again the blend of experience and youth looks promising.

In May the Club will be participating in the Derek Randall Trophy. This is a mid-week competition sponsored by the former England cricketer.
Matches are played on Wednesday evenings (start 6.30 pm), and Rolleston will be at home on the 8th and 29th May, and 5th June. We shall also be hosting one of the semi-finals on 12th June.

The Brewery Cup starts on 9th June when we have a tough 1st round match at Draycott and Hanbury (start 11.00 am). If successful we will be at home to Tutbury or All Stars on 23rd June.

A reminder that we have a match against an MCC XI in August.

Spectators are always welcome at the Willows - hope to see you there !!
