Rolleston Music Circle & Choral Society News 2017

Winter 2017 News

Our annual Christmas concert will take place at St Mary's Church on Wednesday 13th December, at 7.30 pm. As usual, this will include plenty of seasonal favourites, plus light refreshments immediately afterwards. There will be ample opportunities to join in the carols and hymns, so we hope to see as many of you there as possible. Tickets at £5 from Starbucks news, or from choir members.

A reminder too of our special concert next Spring at Burton Town Hall. The main work will be the Sunrise Mass by the young Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Using Latin texts, it creates "a beautiful journey that from beginning to end suggests sadness, pain, chaos, drama and conflict". It calls for a choir of around 100 people plus a 24-piece orchestra, and promises to be a big occasion - reminiscent of our sell-out performances of The Armed Man and Zimbe! in recent years. As before, we will be looking for extra singers to help boost our numbers. Meanwhile please make a note of the date: Sunday 22nd April 2018. Please keep an eye on local publicity, including Rollestonian, for more details.

Meanwhile, we would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Autumn 2017 News

It was good to have so many of you at our concert at St John's Church in Horninglow in July, helping us to "walk in Jerusalem, just like John" in rousing fashion.

We have a busy few months ahead, and we hope to see just as many of you again. Our next concert will be on Saturday 11 November, at 7.30 pm, at St Mary's Church in Rolleston. This will take the title "God Bless America", and will be a celebration of music from the USA. The programme will include three pieces by Eric Whitacre, including the very popular Seal Lullaby. We will also be singing Lux Aeterna by the contemporary American composer Morten Lauridsen, an arrangement of Amazing Grace, and many other tuneful works.

Our Christmas concert will take place on Wednesday 13 December, also at St Mary's Church, also starting at 7.30 pm. As ever, there will be plenty of opportunity to join in some of our best-known carols and hymns.

We would also like to give you notice of a special concert on Sunday 22 April next year at Burton Town Hall. The main work will be the Sunrise Mass by the young Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo (pronounced "Yaylo"). Using Latin texts, it "creates a beautiful journey that from beginning to end suggests sadness, pain, chaos, drama and conflict". It calls for a choir of around 100 people plus a 24-piece orchestra, and promises to be a big occasion - reminiscent of our sell-out performances of The Armed Man and Zimbe! in recent years.

The programme will also include pieces by Eric Whitacre, Grieg's Holberg Suite and an extract from Zimbe! As before, we will be looking for extra singers to help boost our numbers. Please keep an eye on local publicity, including Rollestonian, for more details.

Meanwhile, we resume rehearsals after the summer break on Wednesday 23 August. We meet in the upstairs room at the Spread Eagle on Wednesday evenings at 7.40 pm. We always welcome new singers. Why not give us a try?

Summer 2017 News

It was great to see so many of you at our concert at St John's Church, Horninglow, in March. We were also very pleased to welcome the Mayor of East Staffordshire, Cllr Mrs Beryl Toon and her consort James (of Rolleston of course), who were carrying out one of their last official activities of the mayoral year.

St John's is this year celebrating its 150th anniversary, and we are helping with the festivities. So in July we are staging a concert which will take the name "John" as its theme. We have been thinking laterally: the programme will include the "Cantique de Jean Racine" by Gabriel Faure, as well as pieces by John Lennon, Elton John and Johann Strauss. More "Johns" to be announced!

Please note the concert will take place on Friday 7 July (not the usual Saturday). It may also start earlier than usual. Keep an eye on our posters nearer the time for details.
