Rolleston Music Circle & Choral Society News 2011

Newsletter - Winter 2011

There will be two opportunities to come to our annual concert of carols, music and readings for Christmas. The first will be at 7.00 pm on Wednesday 14th December, at St Mary's Church. This should be a very lively occasion, as we will be joined by children from John of Rolleston Primary School. The second will be a week later, at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 21st December, at the Methodist Chapel in Chapel Lane. Details of both these events will be posted nearer the time, and tickets will be available from Starbuck's as usual.

And two important diary dates for next year: Saturday 2nd June at St Mary's Church, when we'll be putting on a concert of English music, part of the village's "Jubilation" weekend; and Saturday 13th October at Burton Town Hall - where we'll be joined by children from John of Rolleston and William Shrewsbury Primary Schools, plus the Brewhouse Youth Choir and the Lichfield Cathedral School Youth Choir. All these to celebrate our 50th anniversary with a performance of "Zimbe! Come Sing The Songs of Africa" - a highly lively, tuneful and colourful work by Alex L'Estrange. Not to be missed. More details in the weeks and months to come.

Newsletter - Autumn 2011

It's a while since we performed Messiah, so we are making amends on Saturday 12th November at St Mary and St Modwen's Church in Guild Street, Burton. The second half of the concert will feature some of the best-known choruses and arias from Handel's great work. We'll be joined two soloists who are well-known and popular in the area, John Evanson and Allison Taylor. It will be Remembrance weekend, of course, so we are also featuring a number of shorter pieces suitable for the occasion, including John Ireland's Greater Love Hath No Man, and Lux Aurumque by the increasingly popular American composer Eric Whitacre. Once again, a wide range of music. More details available nearer the time.

Newsletter - Summer 2011

We will soon be rehearsing for our autumn concert. Please note the date in your diaries: Saturday 12th November, at St Mary and St Modwen's Church in Burton town centre. Subject to confirmation, the main attraction will be a performance of Handel's Messiah. Look out for more details nearer the time.

Looking ahead to next year, we are also planning to play a major part in the "Jubilation" weekend being planned by RODSEC to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's reign. The event will take place over the weekend of 2nd-5th June 2012 - there'll be much more about this later this year.

Next year will also mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Rolleston Music Circle, which developed into the Choral Society two years later. We are planning a special concert to celebrate this milestone event. More details about that too. nearer the time. So, lots to look forward to!

Newsletter - Spring 2011

We were delighted to see so many of you at St Mary's Church in December for our concert of Christmas carols, music and readings. We really enjoyed the occasion, and all being well we hope to do something very similar at Christmas this year.

We are now busy rehearsing for our next concert, which is earmarked for Saturday 14th May. We will be teaming up with children at Abbot Beyne school for an evening of folk, gospel and popular hits - including music by Holst, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles. Look out for details nearer the time.

We're looking for more singers to join us - especially sopranos and tenors. There isn't a formal audition, and you don't have to be an expert sight-reader. The most important thing is your enthusiasm for performing a wide range of choral music in a friendly atmosphere. We rehearse at 7.40 pm on Wednesdays at the Methodist Chapel on Chapel Lane. Why not come along and give us a try? Or contact our chairman Nick Willmot on 01283 565992 or vice chairman Jo Ballington on 01283 563054. Or just turn up and make yourself known!
